Meeting every client where they are
How GetKenneth.com simplified domain management with a hybrid approach.
About GetKenneth.com
Kenneth Feldman creates custom WordPress websites for small and mid-sized businesses whose vision and needs go beyond what an out-of-the-box solution can offer. More than a web developer, he brings an experienced communication and marketing perspective to every project, working closely with clients to understand how their business operates and the value they deliver. From there, Kenneth automates key business processes and crafts compelling messaging to deliver a website that functions as a practical tool for growth. As he puts it, “The website should be their best employee.”
Impactful, bespoke service is the heart of Kenneth’s work, and he recently rebranded his business to GetKenneth.com to better reflect the expertise, experience, and commitment clients can expect when they work with him.
The challenge: domains are foundational,
but management can be messy
Like any web developer, Kenneth often needs access to manage his clients’ domains in order to connect websites, update DNS settings, or set up email for non-technical business owners. But sometimes getting this access can be challenging, and not having it can cause very real issues. Kenneth highlighted a few challenges he’s seen frequently in his 20+ years:
Access and recovery issues
“I can’t tell you how many people lose their domain information, and it expires, and the site goes down, and the email goes down… Sometimes, they don’t have the password to the account with their domain provider, and then I have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get services back online.”
Outdated registration information
“Maybe someone at the company bought the domain 10 years ago and registered it for 10 years. Now that person is gone, they’re not at the company anymore. Their email is defunct. When that [domain] comes up for renewal, they’re going to be behind the eight ball.”
Kenneth saw offering domains in-house as an opportunity to avoid these issues, making life easier for him and his clients.
And for a relationship-centered business like Kenneth’s, that last pointโdelivering a great client experienceโis really the end goal:
“I’m going to be providing everything any client needs. I have access to it all. Web hosting, design, build, domains. Yes.”
The question was how to work domains into his service offering.
The goal: bringing domains in-house for a better experience
To Kenneth, bringing domains in-house offered clear benefits in the form of reduced headaches, less admin time, and improved client experience. The question was: which registrar platform was best suited to support how he works with clients?
Kenneth had a clear idea of what he was looking for. The checklist was:
Simple, flexible domain management โ for everyone
As most freelance web developers can attest, clients have varying needs, preferences, and levels of technical expertise. Kenneth foresaw that some of his clients would want access to buy, renew, and manage domains on their own.
He liked the idea of a reseller platform that let him list clients as the official registrant while maintaining the management control he neededโwithout limiting tech-savvy clients who preferred to self-manage.
Reliability and credibility
Trust matters to Kenneth. He depends on the partners he works with, and his clients depend on him. Choosing a credible, reliable domain registrar was essential.
An on-brand domain search experience
Kenneth wanted a publicly available domain search experience that allowed clients to find and purchase domains directly from him. And while some clients would easily navigate this themselves, Kenneth also thought it would be helpful in cases where he’s hands-on in the registration process:
“Part of the idea was, I could very quickly tell my client, ‘oh, that’s a good domain.’ Okay, it’s available. Great. You now own it.”
When he began his search, Kenneth was already familiar with Tucows, OpenSRS’s parent company. But the idea of an on-brand domain search led him to OpenSRS’ Storefront solution.
The solution: a two-path approach to domain management with OpenSRS
Kenneth initially signed up with OpenSRS for Storefront’s on-brand domain search experience. But as he began exploring the full OpenSRS platform, Kenneth began using the Reseller Control Panel for clients who preferred him to completely handle domain registration and management on their behalf.
For clients who want a fully managed experience, the Control Panel allows Kenneth to register domains in their name, retain the necessary administrative access, and handle renewals as part of his ongoing service plans. Itโs efficient, straightforward, and fits well into his workflow. Kenneth can handle everything for the client.
At the same time, OpenSRS Storefront still plays an important role.
For more independent clients, Kenneth can direct them to his branded domain search page, where they can purchase and manage domains themselves. This includes handling renewals. And of course, they have the option to enable auto-renew.
This has become Kennethโs operating model: using the Control Panel where hands-on management makes sense, and Storefront where client independence is preferred. In both cases, he has full administrative control, and the client can be the official domain registrant.
โThe fact that there are two options is a positive,โ he says.
โI use them in the ways that make the most sense at the time for the client and for my needs.โ
Beyond operational fit, OpenSRS also offered something Kenneth felt was important: credibility.
โEveryone knows Squarespace and Wix,โ Kenneth explains.
โI can position myself on that [same] levelโdomains, websites, hosting, the whole thing.โ
By working with OpenSRS, a wholesale registrar that powers domain services for major website builders, Kenneth can confidently offer domains as part of his offerings. And he can do this while keeping the experience white-label and client-centered. OpenSRS remains behind the scenes. Kenneth remains the trusted advisor.
The results: less scrambling and a more complete offering
With a growing number of his clientsโ domains centralized in one place, domain management has become smoother and more predictable for Kenneth. And predictability matters when youโre responsible for keeping 175+ client websites running.
He now has the oversight and administrative control needed to catch potential issues before they escalate. Renewal timelines are clearer, and when changes are needed, he doesnโt have to hunt for access. This setup doesn’t just prevent problems, it also removes small but persistent friction from his day-to-day work.
Just as importantly, clients feel taken care of. Those who prefer independence can manage domains and renewals themselves. Those who prefer a hands-off experience know Kenneth is taking care of things.
This allows Kenneth to focus on what clients actually hire him to do: build websites that support growth.
Takeaways for solo developers, studios, and agencies
Kennethโs experience shows that offering domains in-house doesnโt have to mean more admin or more friction. With the right solution, it’s quite the opposite: smoother operations and a more complete offering.
