The Registries: .TV

Video content is the future: “If it moves, put it on .tv.” The .tv registry provider is VeriSign. They just relaunched the ccTLD with great tools to help you and your customers. The numbers speak .TV logovolumes: every minute 20 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube. In the US, 80% of Internet users watch online video at least once a month. We are a culture embracing online media.

.tv is the preferred destination for video, film, animation, user-generated content and playable media of all kinds. It’s also a great choice for product demonstrations, how-to videos, keynote addresses, plus training and educational content. Whether you are in the business of creating videos or just use videos in support of your business, a .tv domain name is the natural place for your video content to live. Some of the most prominent .tv sites on the web include: Leo Leporte’s twit.tv, justin.tv, ustream.tv and blip.tv.

When you sign up for the .tv promo (until December 31, 2009), we’ll give you a complete package of .tv marketing materials (.tv logo, icons, animated banner ads and email templates).

.ES is our registry focus this week. OpenSRS is meeting with ESNIC, the .es registry, when they visit Madrid on September 17, 2009 for the Parallels EMEA Roadshow. es

With over 400 million Spanish speaking people worldwide, “.es” domains have the ability to cross borders as the Spanish domain. “.es” actually translates to “is”. Resellers can use the noun/verb combination to create domain names that play on language. During the last two years, .es have experienced high growth (reaching a million domains in 2008). This may be related to the reduced registration fee and the changes to registration rules.

Red.es, the registry sponsor, is heavily involved in a number of organizations with the goal of promoting the Internet in Spain and with the wider Spanish-speaking population. This includes activism as part of the greater Internet community. They currently have a contest promoting using .es within social networking sites.

    .CC

The .cc domain, from the registry provider VeriSign, is the top-level domain (TLD) for the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Like some other ccTLDs, you can capitalize on it being short, easy to say and diverse. While it is commonly linked to commercial Web sites, there have been other unique uses. In 2006, there was an unusual increase in .cc registrations originating from China. It was discovered that online e-commerce sites in that region were using .cc to mean “Chinese company” and it was creating an unexpected groundswell.

Here are some of the great ways to use this flexible ccTLD:

It’s no secret: mobile content is a big part of the future. The .MOBI domain helps you and your customers get ready to take advantage. They provide a vast array of resources including .MOBI marketing and even tips on best practices for creating mobile websites.dotMobi

.MOBI was conceived by Nokia in 2000 and approved by ICANN in 2005 to ensure that consumers have a simple, uniform way to identify content that will work on any mobile phone – not just high-end smartphones. The .MOBI registry, dotMobi, was formed by a consortium of some of the world’s top content providers, mobile phone manufacturers, operators, infrastructure and payment providers and associations including familiar names like Google, Microsoft, Nokia, Visa and Vodaphone.

dotMobi recently published a report which highlights that the number of mobile Web sites has grown sevenfold since 2008. With that kind of market growth, it is worth investigating your .MOBI options, especially to complement an existing .COM or .ORG site. Your .MOBI content should serve the needs of on-the-go users; it shouldn’t just be the same PC content sent to a mobile phone.

Like other early TLDs, .DE had its start in the 1980s in a university setting (in this case, the University of Dortmund). It quickly expanded with the growth of Internet use requiring the need for more formal management. A foundation was formed in 1993, followed closely by the establishment of the Denic cooperative in 1996. By then, there were approximately 20,000 domains in existence. Now more than a decade later, the volume of .DE domains has grown to more than 12.9 million.
